Who Does God Save?
Acts 3:19–21 19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.
Read the context: Acts 3
Ponder:
? Who was Peter talking to and what was their "wonder and amazement?"
? Why did Peter tell them to "repent?"
? Why is Jesus the the clear object of this chapter?
jne: While they believed the Messiah was coming some day, the Jews who heard Jesus had many misconceptions about how he would come, who he would be, and what he would do. These misconceptions were part of the reason they rejected and crucified Jesus. Neither ignorance nor sincerity were, or are, legitimate excuses for rejecting the Biblical Jesus.
"Turn back" obviously cannot mean undo your participation in crucifying Jesus. It must mean change your attitude toward Jesus. The "Lord sending Christ," "heaven receive," "restoring all things," do not refer to some time in a distant future. If it did then repentance would be of no value, no sins would be blotted out, no times of refreshing would come for anyone before the "time of restoring."
Peter is describing the spiritual truth that when people repent, change their attitude toward Jesus, their "sins are blotted out" and "times of refreshing come" because Christ Jesus comes from Heaven and restores the persons relationship with God as it was designed to be. All of this happened and is as God repeatedly declared it through the prophets of the Old Testament.
God has "blotted out sins" and given "times of refreshing" to people throughout all of history. He has done that for people who "repent" of their attitude and behavior toward God and trust in the truths of His grace as to them, culminating in the birth, crucifixion, death and resurrection of The Messiah Savior, Who is the way, the truth, and the means of LIFE for all who have believed and will believe in the Amazing Grace of the Gospel of the Bible.
